Sports Medicine emerged as health care professionals learned that the complex physical demands of the athlete required unique treatment.

The Sports Medicine "team" is made up of individuals from a variety of fields such as orthopedic surgery, primary care medicine, athletic training, physical therapy and nutrition. Experts from these fields strive to prevent and treat injuries in physically active individuals.

Orthopedic Surgery is very sub-specialized. Many Orthopedic Surgeons pursue advanced training in a specific area of Orthopedics by doing extra training called a "fellowship".

Although there are many sub-specialties within Orthopedics, only two Orthopedic disciplines are recognized as specific subspecialties by the American Board of Medical Specialties and the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery: Hand Surgery and Sports Medicine.
