Orthopedic Surgery is very sub-specialized. Many Orthopedic Surgeons pursue advanced training in a specific area of Orthopedics by doing extra training called a "fellowship".
Although there are many sub-specialties within Orthopedics, only two Orthopedic disciplines are recognized as specific subspecialties by the American Board of Medical Specialties and the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery: Hand Surgery and Sports Medicine.
In order to earn subspecialty board certification, an Orthopedic Surgeon has to be board certification in general Orthopedic Surgery. However, Fellowship training does not give a surgeon automatic certification in that discipline. In 2007, The American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons began offering Orthopedic Surgeons the opportunity to earn a Subspecialty Certificate in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. Requirements for earning the certificate are rigorous, as certification recognizes a high level of proficiency in Sports Medicine. To learn more about the process, please feel free to visit the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) website.
Dr. Browdy is board certified in Sports Medicine, a distinction held by only a select group of surgeons in the Saint Louis area.
